What is Motivational Maps?

The Motivational Map is ISO accredited online self-perception inventory that crucially focuses on motivation. It is fundamentally different from other personality and psychometric tools: nobody goes to work on a Monday morning because of their personality or psychometric profile; they go because of their motivators, and that’s our superpower, assisting YOU to find out “what makes you tick”.

Created in the UK through extensive research into human motivation, it is a self-perception inventory that instigates lasting change for individuals, teams and organisations. The outcome is a report that provides strategies for optimising individual, team and organisational performance.

Motivational mapping is a relatively simply, powerful technology that provides a common language and set of constructs to understand and shape the forces (or motivators) that shape our behaviour, especially at work.

The first set of motivators is called the Relationship Motivators. We speak of this cluster of motivators as being ‘green’ in colour for foundational and root. The Defender wants security, the Friend belonging, and the Star recognition

Next, there are the three Achievement-type motivators: Director, Builder, and Expert. We like to think of them as ‘red’ for action and results. The Director wants control, the Builder wants money, and the Expert wants expertise.

Finally, in our triad of motivators, we find the Growth motivators. We like to think of them of ‘blue’ for aspirational and upwards. The Creator wants innovation, the Spirit wants autonomy, and the Searcher wants to make a difference

The nine motivators each have their own distinctive needs, wants, and desires.
The nine motivators correlate with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
There are no good or bad motivational profiles, only contextual ones.
The three core elements of our life – Relationships, Achievement, and Growth – need to be in balance.

When was the last time you checked in on your work team? When was the last time you all sat down together and figured out what really motivates everyone, what strengthens your collaborations, and what areas were potentially problematic?

The following article by Marie Ball “The ‘Why’ of Being Happy and Successful” was published in Education Today. It follows the case study of SCC staff who had their team motivators evaluated and strategies implemented to increase overall happiness and productivity.
